Book Review: Ivory and Bone

Ivory and Bone  by Julie Eshbaugh

Series: Ivory and Bone

Publication Date
: June 7 2016

Publisher: Harper Teen

Rating: 4 stars

A prehistoric fantasy—with allusions to Pride and Prejudice.

Hunting, gathering, and keeping his family safe—that’s the life seventeen-year-old Kol knows. Then bold, enigmatic Mya arrives from the south with her family, and Kol is captivated. He wants her to like and trust him, but any hopes of impressing her are ruined when he makes a careless—and nearly grave—mistake. However, there’s something more to Mya’s cool disdain…a history wrought with loss that comes to light when another clan arrives. With them is Lo, an enemy from Mya’s past who Mya swears has ulterior motives.

As Kol gets to know Lo, tensions between Mya and Lo escalate until violence erupts. Faced with shattering losses, Kol is forced to question every person he’s trusted. One thing is for sure: this was a war that Mya or Lo—Kol doesn’t know which—had been planning all along.

(I’m feeling a little off today, so this review is pretty short. It’s not my best work, but I tried)

I don’t think I’ve ever read a book set in prehistoric times. I actually didn’t realize that it was until I looked at the synopsis again.

The way the story was told was pretty interesting.

“Why don’t you tell me a story?”

― Julie Eshbaugh, Ivory and Bone

The majority (but not all) of it is told as a story to Mya by Kol, so it uses  words like you, and seems like it’s referring to the reader. It’s kinda nice because it’s like you’re part of the story.

“But at this moment, this one word feels like the answer to every question:

You.”

― Julie Eshbaugh, Ivory and Bone

The story itself is pretty interesting since the narrator doesn’t know who’s lying and who can be trusted. I can’t go too in detailed without spoiling some key details, so I’ll leave it at that.
The writing is beautiful, and Julie Eshbaugh describes things so perfectly. She weaves magic into words.

I liked Kol generally, but he’s not exactly one of my favorite characters. Mya is pretty badass, and definitely my favorite though she could use some loosening up.  There were times I really wanted to smack Peck. He has no tact. At all.

I would reccomend this book to anyone looking for a good read, definitely if your a fan of Pride and Prejuidice.

Cover Reveal: King’s Cage by Victoria Aveyard

I have been waiting for this from the second I closed Glass Sword. I’ll admit, the sequel wasn’t as good as I thought it would be, but hopefully this ending will make up for it.

Anyways, here it is!!!!

OMG look at it!!! 😍

That crown looks so spikes and extremely uncomfortable (hmm… wonder what that might mean) Also, the title.  Kings Cage. I wonder what’s in store for Maven (he deserves whatever it is)

Oh and the tagline

All Will Burn (!?!!?!??)

am I the only one FREAKING OUT over here?!?

Sadly, we gotta wait until Febuary for this 😭

Book Review: Empire of Dust

Empire of Dust  by Eleanor Herman

Series: Blood of Gods and Royals

Publication Date: June 28 2016

Publisher: Harlequin Teen

Source: NetGalley

Rating: 4.5 stars

In Macedon, war rises like smoke, forbidden romance blooms and ancient magic tempered with rage threatens to turn an empire to dust

After winning his first battle, Prince Alexander fights to become the ruler his kingdom demands—but the line between leader and tyrant blurs with each new threat.

Meanwhile, Hephaestion, cast aside by Alexander for killing the wrong man, must conceal the devastating secret of a divine prophecy from Katerina even as the two of them are thrust together on a dangerous mission to Egypt.

The warrior, Jacob, determined to forget his first love, vows to eradicate the ancient Blood Magics and believes that royal prisoner Cynane holds the key to Macedon’s undoing.
And in chains, the Persian princess Zofia still longs to find the Spirit Eaters, but first must grapple with the secrets of her handsome—and deadly—captor.

New York Times bestselling author Eleanor Herman entwines the real scandals of history with epic fantasy to reimagine the world’s most brilliant ruler, Alexander the Great, in the second book of the Blood of Gods and Royals series.

Now, the first book in this series was alright, but hot diggity dang, this was wayyy better than the Legacy of Kings
It’s told through 6 main POVs, and usually I don’t like books that have over 4, but it worked pretty well here since they overlap.  I’m still not entirely sure how Zofia’s story ties in with the rest of them (besides the betrothal to Alex, though we know that’s so not happening), but it’s still pretty interesting.

My favorite POVs  were Heph and Cynane (I’m still not sure if I love or hate her, though it’s definitely one of the 2).  I found Cynanes story really interesting, and she can be badass, though sometimes I really want to slap her.  I also liked Zofia’s POV, and I ship her very hard with Ochus.

BUT OMG YOU KNOW WHAT I REALLY REALLY REALLY SHIP?!?!?

Alexander and Kadmus

I know, you’re thinking I’m crazy but hear me out. Just read the book and you’ll see where I’m coming from on this. This may or may not become my OTP depending on what happens in the next book (Pleaaassseeeeeee Eleanor Herman make this happen *bats eyelashes*).

Anyways, I like how all the stories intertwine and come together to  paint this huge masterpiece. There’s a lot of interesting stuff going on in this book, and I so can’t wait for the next one.

OHMYGOSH and the ending(s)!!! How many bombs and one person drop in just the last few chapters? A lot, it seems. Just as the shock begins to fade, something else happens/is revealed and boom my mind explodes AGAIN. Especially the very last chapter. The wait for bk 3 is gonna be a tough one.

DEFINITELY reccomend this book! Seriously, if you DNF the first book, pick it up again just so that you can read this one.

Merch Review: PotterAlmaMater

Shop:PotterAlmaMater (https://www.etsy.com/shop/PotterAlmaMater)

Rating: 4.5 stars

Merchandise
Type: Harry Potter themed knitted items

Products I Received
: Ravenclaw (movie) Beanie & Ravenclaw (book) bookmark

Now, I’m not someone who usually wears beanies, or any kind of headwear really, but I know I’m gonna be wearing this one a lot. It’s comfortable, gorgeous colors, and it actually looks good on me (seriously, hats and beanies usually look awful with my hair, so I was very surprised when I looked in the mirror and saw that it actually looked very nice). The bookmark is really cute, kind of like a mini scarf.

It was very well made, I’m assuming it’ll last a long time (I’ll post in update in maybe 3-6months). Like I said before, the colors were really vibrant, and I like how’s there’s an option between the colors used in the movie and the colors described in the book. I loved the shade of (bronze?) used in the book based items.  Another thing I liked about the beanie was how it was simple enough to blend with everyday clothing, yet still represent the hogwarts houses.

Overall, I would DEFINITELY recommend this shop to anyone looking for some cute handmade Harry Potter merchandise. They also have neckties, coasters, headbands and a ton of other items.

Product Review: Dana Decals

**I received free samples in exchange for an honest review of these products. This did not in any way effect my review. Everything stated below is my own opinion on these products based on my experience with them**

  Shop:  Dana Decals (danadecals.com)

Product Type: Vinyl wall decals & custom quotes

Rating: 5 stars

Products I Received:  Shoot for the Moon quote, Chalkboard Vinyl Speech Bubble, Brown Arrow Chevron, Olive Arrow Chevron, Stars pattern, Blue Hearts, Black Beetles pattern, & Black Swiss Cross Plus Sign pattern
Wow.

These decals exceeded my every expectation. I was extremely satisfied by them.

The decals are high quality and surprisingly very easy to apply. You just peel off the solid colored paper, apply the sticker where you’d like it to go, and then peel away the transfer paper.

The colors were vivid and rich, and they were very smoothly textured.  My favorites were the chalkboard speech bubbles and the gold stars.

They took about a week to ship. I expected them to come in maybe an envelope type thing, but the packaging was very nice. They came in a tube with the company’s logo on it and it was firmly closed.  The decals where rolled up inside but it was easy to smooth them out afterwards.

Dana Decals has very nice products and I would definitely recommend these to anyone looking for some adorable decorations.

Book Review: Break Me Like A Promise

Break Me Like A Promise by Tiffany Schmidt

Series:  Once Upon A Crime Family Book 2

Rating: 4 stars

Publication Date: June 7th, 2016

Source: NetGalley

How often do I like a sequel better than the first one? Almost never, which is why this book was so suprising. I usually don’t like it when the main character  changes to someone else in a series. This book also has a lot more to do with the criminal and political aspect of the Families and the  Organ Trade.

Maggie is SO different from Penny. I’ll admit, she wasn’t very likable in the beginning, but giver her some time, the girl’s been through ALOT.

She is so strong and determined, the only girl in an all male business. She has to work for every little bit of respect she has. She’s business minded and focused on profits rather than the patients. She doesn’t understand that people die without transplants. Her grief over Carter so real, and no one understands because her relationship with Carter was a secret. The fact that she’s able to overcome it is so inspiring.

The romance is better than the first book’s, were it  just seemed to happen too fast. In Break Me Like A Promise it’s a nice slow burn, and even better, a hate to love  story.

You do need to have read the first book to really understand this one. It’s fun to see how Penny and Char have ended up, and I like how even though they’re secondary characters they still grow and overcome even more challenges.

All in all, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a good read.

Merch Review: Love Squalor

HELLO BOOKAHOLICS,

I’M BACK!!!

I know, I know. You missed me SOOOO much (ha, no).

Sorry for the recent inactivity. Finals had me super busy and stressed, and between studying and binge-listening to Hamilton,  I had no time to post anything. Now that it’s summer I can finally dedicate all of my time reading, fangirling, binge-watching, and blogging.  (Such an exciting  lifestyle, I know)

Ok, now  on to business!

Shop: Love Squalor (https://www.etsy.com/shop/LoveSqualor)

Rating: 4 stars

Merchandise Type: Bookish Jewelry (aka the best kind of jewlrey)

Products I Received: To Kill A Mockingbird necklace & Sherlock wire charm bracelet.
I stumbled upon this cute little shop on Etsy about a week ago, and instantly fell in love with it.

The items I got were good quality, and I love how each one had a little quote on it.  The jewlery  is simple enough to blend in with everyday clothing, but still relate to the book it’s based off of.

The shipping was fast, it only took 2 days for me to receive it, which is pretty awesome considering how I live on almost the opposite side of the country.

The little box it came in (shown above) was cute, with the shops name displayed on the front and a purple ribbon tied around it. Each piece of jewelry had a little mini book cover of the book it’s from. It would make for a perfect gift for a bookaholic.

I would definitely recommend this shop to anyone looking for cute bookish jewlrey, especially necklaces.

My favorite was definitely the TKAM necklace, but this Sherlock bracelet ain’t coming off anytime soon either.
May we meet again (yes I watch The 100, please tell me you do too)

Book Review: Invision

Invision by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Series: 7th book in Chronicles of Nick

Rating: 4.5 stars

Publication Date: May 3rd, 2016

Source: Review copy from publicist

WARNING: This review may contain spoilers to the previous books in the series, so GO READ THEM!!!

Sherrilyn Kenyon, I can not begin to describe what an amazing author you are. I absolutley ADORE this series. I discovered it sometime last year, before the 6th book came out. I was definitely not expecting to binge read 5 of these in one weekend and then die because I realized the next one wasn’t out yet.  If you haven’t read this series, I highly recommend you check it out. It’s EPIC, and you get so caught up in it. It’s like Shadowhunters crossed with Percy Jackson, with a whole lot of  Supernatural thrown in.

OMGOMGOMG ITS GONNA BE A MOVIE!!! [insert excited squeal here]  More details on that later.

I swear, nothing ever goes right for Nick. This book is no exception. I would feel sorry for him if I didn’t enjoy this series so much. He’s so dang funny and he just takes it all in stride.

It did a pretty good job recapping, but you might wanna skim through the last book if it’s been a while. I love how it’s so complex but kinda simple at the same time. It’s like Supernatural, with a bunch of mythologies and lore that just somehow seamlessly fit together.

In this book we get to find out more about Caleb and Xev, and what happened to Zavid. There’s a couple new characters, and some really wonky shtick is going down. Demons, hell-monkeys, and the like (basically it’s like every other Tuesday).

I like Kody, but Caleb is definitely my favorite after Nick.

Ugh, but I also love Xev. And Simi. And Acheron. And Kyrian. And Cherise. And Bubba. And Mark. And Tabby.
Basically, everyone.

I read this wayyyy to fast, and THAT ENDING. Like, I think the epilogue might’ve actually killed me. HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO WAIT ANOTHER YEAR FOR THE NEXT ONE?!?!

(There’s already a cover and synopsis though!!!! Cannot wait!!!!! )

This book was a solid 4.5, definitely a must read. Although if you’ve already gotten this far into the series you know all of them are like that. This series is just AH-MAY-ZING!!! I’ll never get enough of good ol’Nick.

Now,

 WHATCHA WAITING FOR?!?!

GO READ IT!!!

Cover Reveal: Empire of Storms

AHHHH OMGOMGOMG WE HAVE A COVER!!!! PLEASE SOMEONE GIVE ME THIS BOOK RIGHT NOW!!!!

(Note: it’s not the final art)

Ok, so I have some really mixed emotions about this. I love the background and the fire, but the face kinda throws me off. It’s different from the ones in the other books (at least to me it is). I think she looks a lot older in this (btw that is the Eye of Elena around her neck).  Either way, I know this book is going to be ABSOLUTLEY AMAZING. Sarah J. Maas has said that this is going to be the longest book so far.

I LIKE BIG BOOKS AND  I CAN NOT LIE

Sorry, I had to say it

Anyways,

So much happened in the last book, and I don’t know how I’m going to last until September.

Yeah, you heard me.

September

4 months from now
*lays down*
*curls into ball*

*dies*
Thoughts on the cover?

Book Review: The Sleeping Prince

The Sleeping Prince by Melinda Salisbury

Rating: 4.5 stars

Publication Date: May 31st, 2016

Woah

Still reeling from the ending to this book. The Sleeping Prince was beyond amazing. It exceeded my every expectation. It is super rare for me to like a sequel more than I liked the first book.

Synopsis: Ever since her brother Lief disappeared, Errin’s life has gone from bad to worse. Not only must she care for her sick mother, she has to scrape together rent money by selling illegal herbal cures. But none of that compares to the threat of the vengeful Sleeping Prince whom the Queen just awoke from his enchanted sleep.

When her village is evacuated as part of the war against the Sleeping Prince, Errin is left desperate and homeless. The only person she can turn to is the mysterious Silas, a young man who buys deadly poisons from Errin, but won’t reveal why he needs them. Silas promises to help her, but when he vanishes, Errin must journey across a kingdom on the brink of war to seek another way to save her mother and herself. But what she finds shatters everything she believed about her world, and with the Sleeping Prince drawing nearer, Errin must make a heartbreaking choice that could affect the whole kingdom.

I usually don’t like when books change POV throughout the series, but it was perfect in this case.  It took me a bit to realize just who Errin was (in relation to the first book), but it all fell into place as soon as I did.

I  liked Errin once I got to know her better.  She was strong and brave, but not all kickass and self-righteous like most heroines are these days. Errin kept it real. She was doing extremely well given her circumstances and she was smart. She put herself and her family first. Love interest betrays her? She doesn’t get upset and mope around, she decides to get even and beat him at his own game. I especially loved how she got back at Unwin on her way out. Errin was pretty awesome, and I enjoyed seeing this part of the trilogy through her eyes.

One of my favorite things about this was that there was no love triangle, no insta-love. Love triangles have become way too common, and by this point they’re just annoying. Very few actually add to the plot of a book. I absolutely despise insta-love, it’s one of the most cringe worthy things in a book.

I also really loved Silas. Swoon-worthy much? Why must all these fictional guys be so amazing, they’re setting my standards up way to high. No one will ever be able to live up to them (except maybe Jensen Ackles).

The story picks up where The Sin Eater’s Daughter left off, with the Sleeping Prince awake and ready to retake his kingdom.  Do not skip the prologue. Some serious ish goes down in there. The dynamic of this book was very different from the first one, but they fit together perfectly.I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but DAMN, this was good.  I loved the whole alchemy thing, rather than traditional magic. I haven’t seen that in any books recently, and it really set this one apart.
Overall, this book was absolutely fantastic and I had a great time reading it! I devoured this in just a couple hours, and I don’t think I’ll survive the wait until the  next book comes out. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes fantasy, especially fairytales.

If you haven’t read the first book, what are you waiting for? Go and fall in love with this series like I did!

**I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This in no way affected my review, everything stated above was my own opinion**
